Urban’s Carter Road project for the Delaware Department of Transportation recently received a 2016 Engineering Excellence Honor Award from the ACEC’s Delaware chapter during their recent Engineers Week Banquet. Urban’s New Castle office provided concept development through final design and construction consultation for the $4 million full reconstruction of the road in Smyrna, Delaware.
Urban’s Edward Vaughn served as the lead highway designer for the project. The design included the first LED roadway lighting installation in the state, the new best management practices in stormwater management, and the widening of Carter Road to two 11-foot travel lanes, two five-foot wide shoulders, new curbs, and sidewalks. It also included a new enclosed drainage system, utility relocations, right-of-way takes, new bicycle lanes, new ADA ramps, bridge widening, and new traffic signals. The roadway was reconstructed using full depth reclamation (FDR) which saved time and cost. This project was the first time that DelDOT specified this construction technique. Delaware Governor Jack Markell was present for the ribbon cutting ceremony, along with many other state and local representatives.
