The Lehigh River cuts almost directly through the heart of Allentown, dividing the east side of the city from the west side.  For over 50 years, the American Parkway Bridge was left incomplete at the River’s banks, preventing an easy link from Route 22 to Center City.  Today, the bridge is finally constructed and Pennsylvania’s third largest city is already feeling the benefits of the improved infrastructure.

“This bridge is going to further enhance investment in the City of Allentown. This bridge will provide much greater access to Center City, Allentown, making it far easier for those who are traveling from the east,” says Congressman Charlie Dent.

Before the bridge even opened, Roads & Bridges magazine named it the number four bridge project in North America.  The magazine rates the 10 best projects based upon project challenges, impact to the region, and scope of work.  “This is a tremendous bridge.  Make no mistake, we are on the move and our improvements are going to reestablish Allentown as a center of this region for decades and decades to come,” said Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski.

Lehigh Valley sports mascots, FeRROUS of the IronPigs and meLVin of the Phantoms, hitch a ride across the American Parkway Bridge.

While the city will benefit from the new bridge, it is the people of Allentown who will feel the most immediate impact.  The bridge more easily connects residences to the downtown business district, cultural institutions, and sports stadiums.  “People make communities. Bridges bring communities together; make it more accessible and easier to bring [them] together. This is a great day for Allentown,” said City Council President Ray O’Connell.
