Philadelphia’s North Broad Street is gaining 41 new decorative light towers and landscaping along a 2.5 mile stretch. This $8.7 million project is one of the longest streetscape improvements in the city’s history.

The 55-foot decorative light masts are constructed of stainless steel mesh, which encase the lights. They are placed upon concrete medians protected by granite curbs, with a compliment of architecturally designed tree pits containing a variety of hundreds of new trees and thousands of new grasses and shrub species.

This project also brings improvements to sidewalks and roadway at various locations including the update of several corner ramps to meet A.D.A. compliancy.

“North Broad Street is well on its way to being one of the city’s great corridors. We want to take any steps that we can to promote and support this growth and development. Today we are here to announce and celebrate one of these initiatives,” says Michael Nutter, Mayor of Philadelphia.

Urban Engineers is providing construction inspection and management

The Avenue North Renaissance community organization will work with the City, local business owners and residents to oversee maintenance of the streetscape improvements.
