Urban is proud to announce that the League of American Bicyclists recognized the firm with a Silver Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) award, earning it a place alongside 1,366 businesses across the country contributing to the movement to build a more Bicycle Friendly America.
By kicking off the New Year alongside 153 new and renewing BFBs, Urban joins local businesses, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies in all 50 states and Washington, DC, in a commitment to transform American workplaces to be more welcoming to customers and employees who bike.
“When places make it easier for people to choose to bike, they are building safer, stronger, and better-connected communities,” says Executive Director Bill Nesper of the League of American Bicyclists. “Our organization is thrilled when companies like Urban join us in this movement to build a more Bicycle Friendly America. When more people are biking to work or shop, life is better for everyone,”
Headquartered in Philadelphia, Urban provides many amenities for its employees to commute by bike. In addition to a free gym that has showers and changing areas, the firm has a private bike locker area where employees’ bikes and belongings can be left in a secure place away from the elements. There is also an Urban bicycle and helmet that can be signed out and taken for a ride to a local meeting or on a lunch break. The Philadelphia office is conveniently located to most forms of public transportation and is nearby an Indego bike share location. More recently, the firm began offering a class about Vision Zero to educate staff on the national road traffic safety project that aims for infrastructure with no fatalities or serious injuries involving road traffic.
“It is important to me that my employer takes my mode of transportation seriously,” says Kate Mundie, an Urban employee and urban cycling enthusiast. “The firm has shown unparalleled support to me and my coworkers who bike to work every day, and a commitment to Philadelphia's Vision Zero initiative.”
Outside of Philadelphia, Urban's New Jersey office has a gym, and its Erie office has a shower for employees who want to bike, walk, or run to work. All employees of the firm are offered various fitness and wellness incentive programs to stay healthy. Individuals can sign up to participate and need to reach 240 hours of activity per year. They get $240 at the end of the year if they are able to complete the hours. Urban offers a Wellness Program through SimplyWell where employees can go on and complete webinars, quizzes, and more to earn points. If an employee earns 300 points by the end of the year, they will receive a $100 gift card. The firm offers wellness lunch and learns throughout the year about different wellness-related topics.
