Urban is pleased to announce that the firm received the Diversity Award at the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors’ (APC) annual TQI Innovation Conference & Awards ceremony. The Diversity Award honors private and public sector organizations that are champions in advancing diversity and fostering a culture of inclusion within their workforce, business processes, and in the communities they serve.
“We applaud Urban Engineers for their focus and commitment to building a diverse workforce,” said APC Executive Vice President Robert Latham. “We’re proud to celebrate those who are making a difference in their communities and helping to increase diversity in our industry.”
“Our firm is honored to receive this award recognizing our diversity initiatives,” said Urban President and CEO Kenneth R. Fulmer, PE. “As our values statement says, we believe that building a workforce through inclusion, acceptance, understanding, and respect of diverse cultures and backgrounds leads to fresh ideas, personal and professional growth for our staff, and ultimately, better projects and service to our clients.”
Urban has taken many steps to become a more diverse and inclusive business. After a review years ago, it was decided that more diverse colleges and events be included in the locations where the firm recruits. Thanks to these efforts, Urban saw a 15% jump in diverse hires. Urban also has a history of involvement with mentorship organizations that support diversity and inclusion initiatives, like the ACE Mentor Program, the Spark Program, and Philadelphia’s WorkReady program. By supporting programs that promote STEM to underrepresented communities, the firm is helping increase diversity in the A/E/C industry.
Mentorship at Urban is also part of its business practice. The firm has been a long-time supporter of DBE firms, and not just because teaming can be a contract requirement. DBE programs aim to create a “level playing field” by removing barriers preventing DBEs from competing fairly and participating in contracts. Around 10 Urban employees have gone on to start their own DBE-certified firms, many of which the firm continues to partner with, advise, and share work.
APC’s fifth annual TQI Innovation Conference & Awards event brings together members of the highway construction industry and key members of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and PA Turnpike Commission to explore new advancements in industry technology by day, and celebrate industry successes in partnering, community enhancement, and diversity by night. This year, a reception replaced the formal awards dinner to provide more opportunity to connect with each other in person after a year spent behind screens.
