Urban’s multimodal engineering practice includes a team of innovative intersection/interchange design specialists. Nationally recognized roundabout expert Mike Mastaglio, PE, PTOE, leads the team and was invited to participate at the recent Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) 100th Annual Meeting, which was held virtually this year.

The team of Adam Brown, Bill Patton, Chris Burke, and Dan Hutton prepared a presentation for the “Roundabouts and Alternative Intersections Session,” sponsored by the TRB Standing Committee on Roundabouts and other Intersection Design and Control Strategies (AKD80).  It featured a discussion on current practices and emerging issues related to all stages of intersection design. Using videos rather than standard power-point presentations, Mr. Mastaglio and the other panelists highlighted specific topics and lead the ensuing dialogue. Specifically, the Urban team discussed the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization's (SJTPO) Six Points Peanut Roundabout Project, which was recently featured in a Vineland Daily Journal article on the impact of alternate intersections in South Jersey. The piece can be read by clicking here. a simulation of the intersection can be seen below:

The video medium at the virtual conference was a successful way to encourage participation while fostering an enthusiasm for constructing safer and more efficient intersection designs. By showcasing innovative details and concepts from around the world in this engaging way, design that prioritizes society as a whole as they meet and diverge safely at intersections gains momentum. Watch the full presentation below:
