The $1.5 million initiative has created one of Philadelphia’s first “curbless” multi-purpose streets, widened the sidewalk and improved access to public transportation and parking flexibility. With the new layout, the Filbert Street Transformation project creates the opportunity for increased dining capacity, pop-up retail kiosks, public art, and cultural programming.

Urban provided design for the streetscape improvements, including grading the block adjacent to the Market to create “curbless” multi-purpose streets; removing a portion of the parking lane immediately adjacent to the Market on Filbert Street; and widening the sidewalk by approximately eight feet to accommodate additional seating. Access to public transit was be improved, as well as parking flexibility and bicycle racks.

The project is being funded by grants from the William Penn Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Multi-Modal Transportation Fund, and the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority.
