Asbestos Site Survey Support – Evraz Claymont Steel Site, Claymont, DE

Asbestos abatement was required in preparation for demolition of Evraz Claymont Steel, a Claymont, DE, plant housing more than 1 million sf of vacant buildings. Hero Demolition Corp purchased the site intending to resell materials after demolition.

Urban surveyed 55 vacant structures to identify asbestos containing material (ACM). The site was divided into a “hot side,” where heat-related processes occurred, and a side for cold metal activities. One of the larger structures on the “hot side” was covered with hazardous K061 electric arc furnace dust, a byproduct of the steelmaking process.

Before beginning this large-scale asbestos survey, we met with the client, representatives from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), and a partnering environmental consultant to discuss implications of the K061 dust and outline the project. During the two-week survey process, we collected nearly 400 samples, reported observations, and documented activities with photographs. 

Large-Scale Survey

Navigating the large number of abandoned buildings — many which were vast in size — was one of the main project challenges. Facilities were left in disarray with equipment, trash, and other materials littered throughout. It was also challenging to sample and identify ACM in the large structure covered with K061 dust. Another challenge was providing the client with information about the exact locations of ACM so that they could quickly commence abatement and demolition — a top priority. 

Two Weeks, 55 Structures

We delivered a thorough survey in a timely manner and provided a detailed, user-friendly site plan that clearly displayed the locations and quantities of ACM. We also contributed to the final abatement report. Our detailed survey allowed the client to begin abatement and demolition promptly.
