West 125th Street Construction Management for Streetscape Improvements

Efforts to revitalize Harlem’s famed West 125th Street corridor, in Manhattan, focused on  bringing improved waterfront access, stronger transit connections, and a host of other streetscape improvements to the area. Urban provided construction management and inspection services for this $14.5 million New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) project. The work is a key step in transforming West Harlem into the world-class destination and premier regional business district long envisioned by city planners and community groups. Streetscape improvements extend from the Harlem Piers west of West 125th Street to Old Broadway to the east and portions of adjacent streets. Water main and drainage utilities were upgraded to handle the increased load created by the ongoing redevelopment of the area.

Construction activities included the following

  • Installation of street furniture, including benches, bicycle racks, and trash receptacles
  • Planting beds and sidewalks
  • Cobblestone and asphalt roadway reconstruction
  • Drainage and sewer improvements
  • Plaza, street, and architectural lighting
  • Aesthetic treatments at a new transit plaza adjacent to 12th Avenue
  • Addition of transit shelters at bus stops

Urban was responsible for pre-construction phase constructability and biddability reviews, monitoring construction activities, reviewing and monitoring the project schedule, coordinating the efforts with adjacent construction projects on the Columbia University campus and other developments, preparing progress payments, chairing progress meetings, reviewing technical submittals, and implementing a community outreach plan.
